WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that lets users start chats and calls without revealing their phone numbers, using a “username” instead of the traditional numeric identifier. A username must be 3–35 characters long, contain at least one letter, and may include lowercase letters, numbers and certain symbols, but cannot resemble a web address. The system permits users to search for and contact anyone directly by entering their username, thereby boosting privacy and giving people more control over personal data—especially when dealing with strangers or first‑time contacts. Currently the capability is limited to a small group of users in a beta rollout, with plans to expand it gradually. This shift marks a significant change in WhatsApp’s identity model, moving away from phone‑number dependence toward a more flexible, privacy‑centric approach.
